Now is when everyone would laugh! I go into the Babies Room with a winter hat on! Do you all know what’s it’s like having all these hahns using your head as a landing pad!! LOL I got smart! I can take the hands and arms being scratched up, but the head is a bit sensitive! The first four babies are fledged and down to three feedings. They are exploring more and more each day and becoming their own individual selves. These guys will be ready next month and there are still a few available so don’t be shy to ask if you have any questions! Here’s a bit of information
Hahns Macaw, sometimes called the Red Shoulder Macaw due to its gorgeous coloration. Latin Name: Ara Nobilis Nobilis
Description: Smallest member of the “Mini” macaw family. General plumage is green, more yellowish on underparts. Forehead and crown are blue; bend of wing is red, under tail olive green. Facial area is white marked with hair-like dark grey feather lines. Upper mandible is horn colored in the young, darkening to black as the bird matures. Lower mandible is black. Feet dark grey. Average length is 28-33 cm.Average weight: 120 - 160 grams.Females tend to run the lower weight.Expected life span in captivity: 35 +
Origin: Natural range of North Eastern Brazil, South Eastern Venezuela and the Guianas
Sexual Dimorphism: No. DNA is advised to confirm sex.
Cage Requirements with Interior Design: Should be spacious with 1 1/2 times wing span. Ideally we personally recommend 30 x 24, 1/2 to 5/8 inch bar spacing with horizontal bars to encourage climbing and ensure lots of movement and activity. Cage bottoms can be lined with newspaper and should be changed daily. A thorough cage cleaning and disinfection should be done weekly.Cage / Play Stand Locations: Away from such dangers as hot stoves, kitchen fumes, fans, direct sunlight, cold temperatures, predators. We encourage play stands to allow family interaction, play / free time away from confinement of cage. Perches/swings: Sandy perches and swings keep toe nails and beaks in top condition. Cholla perches are a lightweight perch and stimulate forging activity and provide comfort and irregularity. Rope perches / boings / swings are excellent to prevent pressure sores. These also offer amusement and are easily positioned in cage or out. Manzanita perches and java perches provide smooth comfort, irregularity and are easily cleaned. Practically indestructible with natural shapes. Apple/maple/dragon wood/grapevine are good sources of natural perches. 1 inch to 1 1/2 inch diameter. Offering at last three selections of perches will prevent potential foot problems. Additional Toys: Should consist of foot toys, ropes, balls, wood chew toys, acrylic toys may be offered, educational, forging, destructible, swings, orbits, atoms, climbing ropes, jolly balls are alwaysa huge hit as are heavy duty bells and stainless steel chain toys. Rotate toys on a weekly basis, checking all toys for safety and loose ends when rotating and cleaning.
Bath: Large shallow bowls/dishes for bathing should be offered on a regular basis. What we have found works great is the 32 or 48 ounce stainless steel dog dishes!Hahns love water! Given the chance they would love to play the game of running down the arm, under the kitchen tap, and back up the other arm.
Misting is adored by these parrots and should be done 3-5 times a week to encourage preening and good feather condition.
Diet and Water: Fresh water at least twice daily if a bowl is used. Can be easily trained to use a water bottle.Diet should be varied. Good quality seed mix, nuts, vegetables, fruits, pellets, bread, rice, corn, beans, eggs, vitamins/minerals, etc. A varied diet will also provide some “fun” times as they enjoy playing with their food and throwing it around for you to pick up! We have found our adult hahns to be the fussy birds of the aviary; hence we work especially hard with the babies at a very early age and introducing them to a wide variety of shapes, textures, sizes of all foods.
Sleep / Light Requirements: 10-12 hours of natural sunlight. Full spectrum lighting is very beneficial. 10-12 hours of non-interrupted sleep. If they share a family room with the family, invest in a cage cover to cover them for the evening.
Personality: Calm, gentle, highly intelligent, playful, live to be loved and love you in return. We tend to call them our velcro babies, as if allowed they would be quite content to spend their whole day with you. These guys love to preen and explore every inch of your face, neck, hands, arms, basically any exposed skin with their tongues.Beware of blemishes for this reason!
Most hahns tend to nest June/July.For some reason our two pairs have always chosen to nest late in the year, providing us with an abundance of babies during the holiday season. Walk into our Babies Room and poof; we are an instant human Christmas tree of red and green! We could, without hesitation, recommend them for the first time parrot owner, providing, the new parents have done their research and feel this is the parrot that will fit into their lifestyle.Families with children, not a problem, providing again of course, the children have been well versed in giving the respect the parrot deserves and are supervised until they and the parrot are comfortable.
Hahns are very social birds. As with many other parrot species, be careful of the one person bond syndrome and socialize them at a young age with all family members and friends. We have read numerous articles on the great internet of hahns having a nippy trait. To date we can very honestly say this has proven to be uncommon with our babies. They do have large beaks that could do damage if provoked.
Noise level: As a single or two bird family, very low.The biggest complaint we have heard about the noise level of these guys is from the non-stop talking they do in some of their homes! The talking ability of these gems will rival many bird species, starting as young as three months. It’s not unusual for the baby’s first words here to be step-up as we they are also taught their step-ups early in life. Don’t get me wrong, they will have vocalization periods early morning and early evening, which are normally short lived. It’s only natural. As with any bird, do not, I repeat, DO NOT acknowledge your parrot if they are in the cage and start sounding off.IGNORE them.Once they have quieted go and get them out.Remember what I said about the intelligence these guys process and how very quickly they would learn exactly how to rattle your chain to get what they want and out of the cage by sounding off!!!Believe me when I say our babies are taught this valuable lesson right from the get-go!We have had 20 hahns in our house at one point in time last year and the previous year.Anyone entering the house would never know we had one, let alone 20! Hahns co-habitat very well with many other species. To name a few we know of first hand would be conures, caiques, senegals, red belly, meyers, jardines. Please supervise.
Fledging: In our opinion it is critical that a parrot be allowed to properly fledge and be allowed to have freedom to master the art of precision landing, developing chest muscles, etc. For that reason our babies have a parrot safe room to call their own full of toys, gyms, ropes, get-a-grips, jolly balls, etc. all suspended from the ceiling. They have at least 3-5 hours a day out of their cages to roam around free. Food, water and bath are always accessible in large dishes on top of cages. Babies are only clipped a few weeks before leaving our home. The first clippings from each baby are laminated with their DNA papers and Hatch Certificates, all for safe keeping in one spot.
All happy and ready for bed, that would be us! We have heard thru the grapevine now that Jo has put a nice comfy happy hut in with us, that we have to not only spend our days in our new cage, but the nights as well. Crud can you imagine!
A couple of us took our first flight this morning so we have also heard that we’ll be allowed to spend a good part of our day out and about the playroom now. That’s gonna be some kinda fun! Lots and lots of toys, java trees, jolly balls, atoms, rope highways, get a grips, all kinds of things to explore.
The smaller guys in the brooder get their blood taken to see how many boys and girls. So far they are pretty equal, two boys and two girls. The little jardine you see in the video also gets blood taken today for sexing. Makes no matter on the sex of that going concern, we have folks waiting in line! LOL

I believe wholeheartedly that you are the reason my little Regan is so special. His gentle and loving nature is a testament to the personalized attention that you shower on each of your babies. From the moment I opened this little guy’s travel carrier his been full of hugs and kisses and continues to melt my heart, (I was impressed to see his carrier was all decked out with toy’s, comfy perch and enough food for a week, he seemed to be suffering no ill effects from his trip to Newfoundland).
I am owned by 40 birds, rescued, adopted, bought in pet stores, other breeders and some I have bred. yet I sensed something special about Regan. He insists on tagging along when I would spend time in the aviary rooms. thought it was just to be with me, NOT SO. He would seek out all the rescued, alone and adopted birdies. Did not matter what species (doves, cockatiels, lovebirds, budgie, finches) I would find him grooming, playing and if needed just sitting by a frightened little tiel that was abused by humans. As every day past I would find myself watching what this little guy was up to. Then one day I walk in the main aviary room and I am greeted by all my untamed/rescue birdies which seemed to be taking turns landing on my head/shoulder. I swear Regan had something to do with this. Just when you think you can not possibly love this little guy anymore he surprises you again. Regan was playing on his gym today and I was in the kitchen preparing some birdie lunch. I could hear laughter coming from Jennifer in the living room. Something she has not done in months. I dropped everything and came running. (A little about Jennifer. She has Rett Syndrome. I have cared for her from age 4yrs and is now 28yrs. At age 3 she was a normal little girl, laughing/eating her own ice-cream,talking and chasing butterflies with her granddad. Then Rett’s started to surface. She has lost most of her fine and gross motor skills and language but has found away to communicate with vocal sounds and eye movements . Her arms are in constant movement and vocals can be loud. She has over the years enjoyed watching the birds fly and play, and it has a calming effect on her but none would ever come close. Her repetitive arm/hand movements would frighten them ) Until Regan, he had not flown until today, and had flown over to Jennifer’s wheelchair tray. She was laughing with excitement and he was just sitting their calm and curious. The look on her face to have a bird this close was worth a million. After I took a few pics Regan let me take Jennifer’s hand and stroke his head. This was a special moment. I have always believed that Jennifer is here to help teach us. But also know that one of the reason you are here Jo was to raise that beautiful little guy so Jennifer could have that Special Moment, By the look on her face she felt like she was 3 again.
I know you have heard this a million times before but Thank You JO !!!
To all that have read this, I am sure you have already experienced one of Jo’s babies, her #1 customer service or she has responded to your relentless questions/concerns. If not you’re missing out.

If you are wondering who the chatter boxes are that you hear in a lot of the video’s it would be these two, Arbie and Muffin. You can be sure these two, especially Arbie, is NOT going to miss anything going on in this house. The original plan was for these two to breed, but due to Arbie’s concern for everything going on around him, I really don’t think that’s gonna happen anytime soon. We raised Muffin ourselves and have had Arbie since a baby and that is four years ago!
Go in the nestbox and miss something, oh my good gosh No. He is much too nosey for that!!
Arbie normally gets the blame and /or credit for everything which is totally unfair as Muffin can chatter away every bit as good as Arbie, just maybe not as much
